EUR/USD Price Forecast: A Delicate Balance Ahead of US Inflation Data
The EUR/USD pair is currently trading in a tight range around 1.1545 during the Asian trading session on Wednesday, with the US Dollar (USD) maintaining a calm stance ahead of the highly anticipated US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for May. This economic indicator is set to be released at 12:30 GMT, and investors are eagerly awaiting its impact on the market.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the Greenback's value against six major currencies, is currently trading sideways near 99.96. This sideways movement suggests a cautious approach from investors, who are likely assessing the potential implications of the upcoming CPI data.
The US CPI report is expected to reveal a headline inflation rate of 4.2% Year-on-Year (YoY), a significant increase from the previous month's reading of 3.8%. Additionally, the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy items, is projected to grow at an annualized pace of 2.9%, surpassing the previous reading of 2.8%. These figures highlight the ongoing inflationary pressures in the US economy.
In the Eurozone, the European Central Bank (ECB) is set to make a pivotal monetary policy decision on Thursday. Market expectations indicate that the ECB will raise its key borrowing rates by 25 basis points (bps) and provide a hawkish outlook on monetary policy. This decision comes as inflationary pressures have intensified due to soaring energy prices, prompting the ECB to take a more aggressive stance.
EUR/USD Technical Analysis
The EUR/USD pair is currently trading almost flat at 1.1545, with a bearish near-term outlook. The spot price remains below the 20-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at 1.1611, indicating a potential downward trend. The Symmetrical Triangle formation further supports this sideways trend.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 37.9, which is below the midline, suggests that the downside pressure persists, despite the pair's proximity to recent lows. On the downside, the initial support level is near 1.1502, where buyers have previously emerged. If the pair fails to hold this level, it could slide to the March 13 low at 1.1411. On the upside, the 20-day EMA at 1.1611 acts as the first resistance, followed by a more significant descending trend-line barrier at 1.1698. Only a sustained move above these levels would alleviate the current bearish bias.
In my opinion, the EUR/USD pair's current consolidation around 1.1545 is a result of market participants' cautious approach ahead of the US inflation data. The potential impact of the CPI report on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy outlook could significantly influence the pair's trajectory. Additionally, the ECB's monetary policy decision on Thursday will play a crucial role in shaping the EUR/USD's future direction.
The upcoming economic events and market dynamics highlight the delicate balance between inflationary pressures and central bank actions. Investors should closely monitor these developments to make informed decisions regarding the EUR/USD pair's short-term and long-term trends.
